Led by a team of Bedfordshire‑based creatives, Beyond Luton Carnival 50 is an exciting new community-led heritage project, celebrating Luton’s Afro‑Caribbean community and 50 years of Carnival through photography, community stories, archive and events.
At its core, this project is about continuing a legacy. Carnival and Caribbean culture have shaped Luton for generations, and by creating spaces rooted in community memory and cultural pride, the project aims to ensure that the spirit of Carnival, its creativity, unity, and significance, remains alive for the next generation.
The project is a collaboration with photographer Karis Beaumont and her archival initiative Bumpkin Files – a journal focused on the visibility of Black British identity beyond a monolithic lens. Venturing beyond London-centric narratives of Black Britishness, Bumpkin Files holds space for overlooked stories by documenting and highlighting culturally rich communities across the UK.
